![]() ![]() ![]() What’s good these days? Was Bravely Second good? If you haven't played an Etrian Odyssey since the first one where's a good place to start? What exactly are these Untold series of games? For instance, I saw they made a new Xanadu I guess and turns out it’s a Persona-like.īut hey, maybe I’m missing something? Trying to not be cynical here. Unfortunately a lot of jrpgs seem to be betraying their roots. They haven't been too helpful and I need your help so I can add games to the list. All bemoan the greater emphasis on action rpg combat. Most are disappointed by recent jrpgs despite the fact the genre seems to have bounced back. I’ve talked to some of my old jrpg buddies and absolutely none of them have much of anything to suggest so I've decided to turn to you all here. I enjoy mechanically rich games with good, deep stories. Trails in the Sky (started it way back but it kind of bored me so I stopped) So far I've curated a list of some recent jrpgs to play: Basically, I am a connoisseur of the genre and lately the only thing that wets my tongue are Soulsborne games which in my opinion play like dungeon crawlers of the Shining in the Darkness, Phantasy Star 1, Shin Megami tensei, Druaga, and Wizardry tradition exception in real time. My knowledge of the genre is encyclopedic and I’ve pretty much mastered it. I love my Dragon Quest’s, Chrono's, and Final Fantasy’s as well. Story-based jrpgs like Suikoden, Xenogears. Hardcore shit like Tactics Ogre, Shin Megami Tensei series, Shining Force II, Ys, Lufia II, Grandia, Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2, Breath of Fire (especially Dragon Quarter). It is another jrpg that doesn't molley coddle and forces the player to learn from mistakes. I also just picked up Fire Emblem 7 and that’s been going well. It might be the best overall game I've played in the past ten years. It's everything I desire from RPGs and it has ignited something I've missed this decade. It is mechanically rich, features in-depth lore, forces a keen use of resources, keeps your toe, and pretty much doesn't play (especially the DLC). ![]() I’ve been playing through the Soulsborne series and found it fantastic. What a waste.ĭQ11 was okay but also disappointing as they streamlined far too many traditional elements tied to DQ. Ten years for a game that’s 6-7.0 at best. I didn’t beat it despite being really big fan of P1-4.įFXV was disappointing as well. The amount of bloat, excess, and hand holding ruined it for me. So I’ve found the genre to be beyond poor lately.
